ParticipantA way out of the economic melt-down: the exponential creation and sale of Obama-inspired music, books, websites and last, but not least, kitch. We sold over $600 worth of last minute raffle tickets for Obama print and cut-out on I-day. Had to turn vendors of home-made kitch away as they came forward with their inspirations. Maybe some kind of weekly Obama-market in specified parking lots around the country.

ParticipantOoo – very nefarious, Bry. Nope – didn’t go there – sort of a reverse Manchurian Candidate.

ParticipantMAN OH MAN I GOTTA GET INTO THIS
My deep apologies for bumping this thread and possibly opening up a can of worms. And THEN – not even checking back in for 48 hours. Gosh-a-roony – you guys have been busy!
Did y’all see “Independence Day?” Of course you did – you’re all total scifi geeks. It’s one of my guilty pleasures, btw. ANYhoo – the scene on Air Force I, when the Prez says, “There is no Area 51” and the weasely guy says, “Uh – that’s not quite right.” or some such thing. THIS is how I read Cov’s comment. I don’t know the song reference. I was not offended even though I imagine that I am about the only one around here who even alive when JFK met his end.
I read this as he suggested: That there are deep, dark secrets in some vault down in the sub, sub, sub basement of the WH. (btw, I understand that the NSA building is almost stealth-like in its construction)
Politics – Yesterday was amazing. We had over 240 people at our event here in Scottsdale and made the front page (color picture) of the state’s largest Newspaper. I am going to attempt to post a pic.
Let’s see, hmmm, how do I do this?
OK – photos 8,9 and 10 of this series.
ETA: click on Arizona on Inauguration Day
For what it’s worth, and to quote a past famous CA gentleman, “Can’t we all just get along?” Or as my husband says of cable news: “Let’s not find controversy where none logically exists.”

Participant@Colleenkydink: Au Contraire – you do just fine.
Bumping this due to the fact that . . . we won’t have him to kick around anymore in less than 38 hours.
What are y’all doing for the big day? I am hosting a wingding at a sports bar we rented – 21 big screen TVs, breakfast, Obama Mama Mimosa’s, Screw-W-drivers, It’s About Bloody Time Mary’s. There are 153 people who have prepaid and about 25 more who have said they’re coming. ‘Twill be an historic day.

ParticipantFeeling all warm and fuzzy today and so I will just say it: I miss you all!
Been very busy but found some time to lurk a bit in the past couple of weeks. This thread has caught my attention re. creativity.
JoAnn: you are simply amazing. I have great admiration for the kind of minds that can produce such a vast amount of art as you have. Looking through your pics, I get the impression that you can’t make things nearly as fast as your mind’s eye sees the final product. What I mean is – given the extensive variety in media, I would guess that you are always thinking about what to do next. I have only known a few people who see the world like this. My sister-in-law is one of them and I marvel at the way she creates. (she works in bronze, clay, fabric, wood – and 2 dimensional stuff as well)
As for the broader discussion, I agree with Borba re. jazz vs. classical music and the ability for (performing) musicians to be creative. I have recently had similar discussions with several people – both musicians and non-musicians and what I find endlessly fascinating is the way people listen to, hear and are effected by music. (and I believe this to be directly related to the creative aspect of music) A group of us were listening to a mixed CD (REALLY mixed) with a little of everything on it. “A Punk” (Vampire Weekend) came on and the musicians in the group tended to like it far more than the non-musicians. We boiled it down to the surprises in instrumentation and (in particular) rhythm. We were listening “under” the vocals and hearing things the others were not (or weren’t paying attention to) and had a completely different experience as a result. Our conclusion was this: for us, this group held far more appeal not only viscerally but also because we felt that the group was doing something new, more creative. For the non-musicians, the vocals and melody line bothered them and it didn’t sound “different” than other songs they didn’t like.
Anyhoo – Happy Happy New Year Everyone.

ParticipantWhen Froomkin writes, “How are these not war crimes?” there can be only one answer: When you change the law, commit an act that used to be a war crime, you can say just about anything you want like this:
“I want to know the truth, too. . . . [Y]ou’ve just got to know that I’m interested in the truth, as well, just like you’re interested in the truth.”
WTF?
Now only 32 days, but who’s counting?

ParticipantStill JoCo Day here in sunny AZ. AND Phoenix just went to 200 on Eventful for your big day! Happy Birthday. You ruined everything in the nicest way.

ParticipantFaded out? People in my non-virtual life would disagree . . . Just been in the belly of the political beast for a while. (haven’t managed to crawl out and won’t for the next 2 years) And YOU”RE the one who faded out for quite some time. Good to see that you made your way to see JoCo over there.

ParticipantI strongly urge all music nerds to check out this website. This woman did a “thing a day” and even wrote a concerto for Theremin! I met her this summer at the NetRoots Nation Con in Austin but had no idea until tonight how strange and wonderful she is. I just found her card in the bottom of a bag I used there.
If you’re out there, Colleen and Borba, I think you two will particularly enjoy her stuff.

ParticipantWake me up when it’s over. On second thought, if McC manages to win over enough people with his “oooh – be verwy verwy afraid” campaign, don’t wake me at all.
My average 4-hour sleep, 20-hour work days of “community organizing” is made tolerable with occasionally checking in to read great posts like Luke M’s. The Onion Headline takes the cake.
