ParticipantJust popping in to say:
I don’t see the comment that shaggy refers to in the first of his double posts, so presumably it’s been emended. Thank you for emending, whoever you are, original poster. I try not to come down too hard on misspellings, but please, yes, do make sure to include all the “m”‘s in “Mormon”.
[Also, it’s “Latter-Day Saints.” “Mormon,” as I understand it, is the name of a prophet of that religion, so “Latter-Day Mormons,” assuming charitably that that’s what someone intended to type, is a trifle ignorant. I am not, though, a Mormon, or a Latter-Day Saint, or even a Mensa member, so as always, please step in and correct me if I’m wrong.]

mtgordonParticipantI’m currently in Provo, Utah on business. I recognize the need to watch what I say here. 😉

ParticipantIn all fairness to CoultonFan_#314159, it was a quote from an English satirical publication, which was aware of its spelling. 😉
Re: JC’s joke: I just heard the ground rumbling and feared an overrun by feminists. For someone who had been so careful to tread lightly in the political thread, it seemed something of a provocation from him. I’ll grab a lawn chair, kick back, make some popcorn, and see what develops. This should be fun…

mtgordonParticipantI have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance
in London, that a young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year
old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether
stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it
will equally serve in a fricasie, or a ragoust.February 5, 2008 at 3:47 pm #26558Bry
ParticipantSince this is a thread about politics, I would’ve thought the appropriate Swift passage would be the Little-Endians versus the Big-Endians.

ParticipantQuote from Wiki to explain that previous pun, which I later censored so as to not cause any offense
“St Albion Parish News was a regular feature in the British satirical magazine Private Eye during the premiership of Tony Blair. George W. Bush usually appeared in the Parish News each week as “Rev Dubya Bush of the Church of the Latter-Day Morons”, in reference to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons)”
I am fully aware of the religion and their belief system, and I fully respect such believers’ choice of views. I guess that joke is funnier if you are/were a reader of Private Eye back in the day when this was featured.
Anyhoo I’d rather not get embroiled in religious warfare across the Atlantic when this is a topic reserved for debating Coulton’s political affiliation.February 5, 2008 at 4:01 pm #26561Bry
ParticipantOh, okay. Since I didn’t see the original quote in context, I imagined it was a gratuitous shot at Romney (who, of course, is an actual Mormon) — not that I prefer anti-Bush comments to anti-Romney comments [as though I could care less], but I assumed you were attacking Romney because of his religion. Sorry for jumping to conclusions.

ColleenkyParticipantI’ve been amused by watching 25+ emails go through my inbox today in response to a message I sent to the Enigma listserv, “JoCo says, ‘Vote for Obama’.” The group includes a number of science types, many in aerospace. The discussion boiled down to a debate about whether it’s more important to support science education from the bottom up (i.e., improving the educational infrastructure), or from the top down (i.e., funding space exploration to entice more folks to study the sciences). The debate started by one person asserting that while Obama does the former, Clinton does the latter, so he’s voting for Clinton. The whole thing sounds very chicken-and-egg to me, and is not significant enough for me to change my vote.
Thoughts?

ParticipantAbout JoCo’s smart women jab, I thought it was funny too.

mtgordonParticipantSwift’s “Modest Proposal” is something that’s sometimes misunderstood by those who aren’t familiar with the context. The problem with the Little-Endian vs. Big-Endian is that it’s not so easily quoted; it takes more than five lines to explain it. It also has the distinct disadvantage of not being so offensive (except, perhaps, to chickens).

ParticipantDoes anybody know what month the topics of religion, the meaning of life, and egg salad were posted?

ParticipantEgg salad came up in July of course… Along with potato salad and macaroni salad and just generally all things summer.
As for political statements…
I had to vote Republican today, which I wasn’t happy about. I registered as a Republican when I was 18 because I really wanted to vote that year and my Dad is a Republican. It was the 2000 election, which seemed big and important and I was so excited to finally be part of the process. Cut to now when I have my own political opinions and fully support Barack Obama. Couldn’t vote for him so I voted for John McCain, the Republican I’d like to see nominated. I kept forgetting to re-register… and working such late nights messes with my thinking.

ParticipantRegister as an independant, then you can vote as you wish. Or did I miss understand the USA system.
February 6, 2008 at 3:42 am #26573Skizzlethorpe
ParticipantSome states, like the one I live in, have a "closed primary." Essentially, that means that you can only vote in the primary of the party you are registered as. So an independent would actually have no primary to participate in. An "open primary" means that any registered voter can choose any one ballot to complete. Pro's and Con's to each…
