Spiff
ParticipantSure this is a Paul and Storm song, but it’s practically an honorary Coulton song, so I feel comfortable posting about this here. I’ve made a WoW video for “Live” and have entered it into a WeGame.com machinima contest. Right now, it’s only viewable over at WeGame, but once I know the results of that contest (probably early Sept.) I’ll post it to my normal YouTube channel too.
This video was a total blast to make. “Live” does such a great job of mimicking a Coulton song that I just had to play off of an old Coulton video when making the one for “Live” (guess which one…). And “Live” is so full of epic drama and pathos! We’re talking Oscar nominations here (ok, maybe not).
I want to give full credit where credit is due — I was originally going to just have the video end with a rousing bloodbath, figuring bloody carnage was a great way to end any video. My wife didn’t agree though, and she came up with the actual ending that’s used in the video, which is much better than what I had come up with. But don’t worry. I left in plenty of carnage. 🙂

ParticipantSpiff, you have totally outDONE yourself! That is such a beautiful video- I already loved the song, but now I love the lil Skullcrusher mad scientist even more than in his first vid. All those wonderful little touches- the posters on his bedroom wall, the way his hand merged into hers at the end, his happily bouncing out of the cadaver after extracting the heart, so sweet. I didn’t recognize where Igor is from though- I never saw an undead blood elf before, or is it a new creation all of your own?
Any reaction yet from Storm and Paul?

ParticipantPaul and Storm are very enthusastic about it, and have just made a blog post about it. I was a little worried that they’d be bummed that the video is basically an extension of Coulton’s “Skullcrusher Mountain” video, rather than getting a video all their own with brand new characters. But it fit so well I just couldn’t not extend the characters from “Skullcrusher” into “Live”.
I’m really happy with it too. All those little touches you describe are what makes making these videos so much fun. One of my favorite shots in the video is the one where Dr. Skullcrusher (or whatever his name is) is sobbing, sitting on the floor by the unliving Bride on her table while the villagers are pounding on the door. If that doesn’t tug at your heartstrings, you’re cold, man. 😉
For Igor I used the “crackelf” model in the Model Viewer. It’s the model they use for the blood elves who have gotten too strung out with their magic addiction. You can find them in the Blood Elf starting zone, and also on the Sunwell isle.

ParticipantSome people (other contest entrants?) over at WeGame have questioned whether I had permission to use “Live” for my video, asserting (hopefully) that without permission, my video should be disqualified from the competition. I told them that the song was Creative Commons so I didn’t need explicit permission, but then Paul & Storm went and made a post, saying that the song was indeed CC, which allows people to make derivative works without permission, following it with, “And even if they weren’t [allowed to use it], consider this post our official permission”.
Awesome. It’s like getting into a fight with a schoolyard bully and then having your big brother walk up behind him to back you up. Pwned, haters! 😉

AngelasticParticipantI’d love to watch it, but their video player is incredibly slow, and I can’t even rewind to get it back into sync once it’s buffered. I’ll wait for the QuickTime version.

ParticipantI’ll repeat what the comment I posted on the We Game wall, you’ve gone from strength to strength Spiff! I thought your vid for Bacteria was one of your best, but you’ve outdone yourself again!!! Thanks for taking a song I already loved and voted for and adding even more to it! Love all the wee jokes and the little Romeo and Juliette bit at the end, with a twist!
Also loved the fight scene at the end where she drags the female villager back off screen and pwns her! XD
Great stuff and good luck in the competition!Edit: The name Oxhorn sounds familiar, is he a movie maker too? I’ve heard it somewhere…

AngelasticParticipantSince I have nothing to contribute regarding the video, I’ll mention that when I read the title of this thread, I thought it was either going to be Spiff-in-a-fishbowl or something about how to live Spiff’s so-called life.

ParticipantOxhorn is a famous machinima guy (as much as any machinima guy can be truly famous). He’s got lots and lots of well-made videos scattered across the Interwebs, with series like “Inventing Swear Words”, “Associate Professor Evil Kills All [whatever he kills in that particular video]”, and others. Maybe his most famous is ROFLMAO and Red Snappah. “Red Snappah” was so popular that when Blizzard created the Outlands expansion, they put Red Snapper into the game as something you could catch with the Fishing profession, just because of Oxhorn’s video. Oxhorn has just recently been hired by WeGame to be an in-house machinimist, which is sort of a dream job. Last year, he was one of the group of machinima folks that Blizzard invited to attend Blizzcon.

ParticipantAaah ROFLMAO thats the one! I knew I recognized the name from somewhere. He didn’t do The Internet is for Porn too perchance did he?
Wow, in-house machinimist, what an awesome job! That’s a lot better than in-house document formatter which is sometimes what I feel like my job title is.August 18, 2008 at 4:56 pm #50782Spiff
ParticipantNo, he didn’t do the “Porn” one. I’m actually not sure who did that one, but it wasn’t Oxhorn.

ParticipantI guess it was the tauren that confused me! 🙂

ParticipantI have to agree with the mob, you have raised the bar once more Spiff on your already brialliant videos with this one. And I did feel my self welling up with the ending, I must feel empathy very easily.
