chicazulParticipantAs revealed in the “Get Excited” thread, one of the younger Sea Monkeys was disappointed to miss her school’s science fair for the cruise. In response, we’re throwing our own science fair! This is an unofficial event, held at a time and place to be decided, probably on a sea day before the concerts. Science projects will be judged by talented Sea Monkey volunteers from all aspects of science and technology. You are all invited!
Due to the problems involved in packing a science project on vacation, I advise focusing more on presenting results achieved, or small and simple projects that won’t make much mess.
Do you want to help? Here’s how:
1. Spread the word! I’d like any Sea Monkey who wants to be involved to have a chance, especially the kids! If you or someone you know has children who might want to be involved, please pass along this information.
2. Bring the science! Even if your school days are well behind you, if you want to show up with a project and talk about science, cone on in! But please sign up on this Google spreadsheet so we can estimate how much space we’ll need.
3. Contribute! If you want to volunteer as a judge, there’s space on the spreadsheet for that. If you can contribute time or materials for last minute, low-cleanup science projects that could be brought on the ship you would be an invaluable assistance, and I would love to coordinate that with you.
More information can be found on the wiki.

elliomegParticipantI will gladly contribute time and materials. I’m also willing to help with actual clean-up (surprising what I can be talked into in the name of science). 🙂

BlueParticipantSomeone had better stick a nail in a potato and use it to power a clock or I call shenanigans.

ParticipantI actually spent a bit of time tonight working out optimizations for fruit and vegetable batteries. I still don’t expect them to be too impressive without getting very involved.

SusParticipant@Blue Somebody must do this, just so we can hand out a MacGyver Award For Outstanding Achievements In Tinkering (for Science!).
On topic: I’m no good at science, but I approve of this fair So. Much. If I can help out in any way, I will.

ParticipantI’m great at fair coordination, judging, logistics, and talking with elementary scientists. I’ll do whatever you need!

BrettGlassParticipant…or stick a nail in a couch potato and he’s sure to clock you one. 😉

ParticipantWhat format of submission do you prefer for landlocked monkeys? A paper and video? Just the written work? I will be bringing 2 landlocked school age submissions. I think I will be able to bring 1 laptop to sow a video submission but the kids will want the others to keep them entertained at Grandma’s house. 1>2
I suppose we could just put up a video pre-cruise.

ParticipantSomeone on the Facebook page (Kim, I think?) had the genius idea to use two legal sized file folders taped or stapled together to make a mini presentation board that would be light and easy to fit on the bottom of a suitcase. It would be a great way to easily present information from land-locked mini monkeys. Experiment data or research information could be displayed on these and set up around the area (I’m currently assuming a corner of the games room) so people could check them out. It would probably be easier than trying to display a video. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure my notebook computer will be coming since my husband is involved in the twit-arrr thing so I could bring that down to wherever we are, and as long as your video was on a usb we could just use my computer for video submissions.

ParticipantI think I will shoot for a video, on USB to go along with it and if we can present the video great and if not the world wont end. I think this will be more of a concern for my 1st grader.
Thanks

chicazulParticipant@Julievil Scheduling is still being worked out but it looks like the science fair will happen near the end of the cruise. If distance submissions are posters or similar, I hope to display them in the game room beforehand to maximise the amount of feedback we can collect for the kids. If they want to record a video to show the judges I’m sure something will work out.

R343LParticipantI’m excited to see so many kids planning to participate!

SapphireMindParticipantMy son (12) has decided he’s going to work on a project explaining relativity. It was between that and Schrödinger’s cat (no he wouldn’t be making the box, just doing a project explaining how it applies to quantum mechanics)
They’re excited about medals. 😀 My daughter was worried that her project wouldn’t be good enough to “win something” but I reassured her that the point was SCIENCE, and LEARNING – you always win with that.

GrimoireParticipantThe medals are pretty fantastic. They have a Stargate look to them.

SapphireMindParticipantI know!!!!
