thomastParticipantMy layperson’s understanding is that the CC license doesn’t enter into the equation, rather that when a song is published, under US copyright law, there is a “compulsory” or implied license that allows people to perform the song without obtaining permission. Fees must still be paid for it, but that is done through ASCAP, etc (and I use the passive voice to show how gentle the enforcement is). A venue pays fees to ASCAP which then pays out to artist. Artists are responsible for registering their songs with one of these groups.
So JoCo performing Sweet Caroline, Baby Got Back or other covers is paid by venues’ fees to those organizations, just as Disney’s use of his song is paid by those fees. (As an aside, recording cover songs is a somewhat different issue.)

ParticipantWell, as a fan, watching it get butchered and yet earn sincere audience appreciation for the intact bits of JoCo wit, it gives me the same feeling I get when I hear some classic Beatles song reworded and used to advertise panty liners or deodorant or something. Bleagh.

ParticipantI wonder if Sir Mix A Lot is even aware of Jonathan Coulton.

ParticipantJC’s response to my message to him about the Disney thing:
Yes, I’ve seen that. I categorize it as “not a threat.” But thank you for looking out!

ColleenkyParticipant@CJ00: I can’t find a reference right now, but the answer is yes. IIRC, there has been no direct communication between the two, but Sir Mix-A-Lot knows about the cover.

ParticipantNot a threat perhaps and of course he is free to see things as he wishes but if he’s not being credited he could be losing out on a large potential for exposure.

ParticipantYeah, he really should be credited for the song. I bet a large number of people would become fans if they had known all the facts.

Participantcrossposted from the JoCopedia thread, cause I just now realized that was the wrong place to post:
anyone know what kind of guitar JoCo uses? Strings, accessories, etc?
I bring this up cause I always saw him tuning with his head down in videos, and I don’t know how, but I just realized that the guitar might have a built in tuner. It’s got the piezoelectric pickup hole dealie, so this wouldn’t be so far fetched. JoCo’s acoustic also seems a little….thinner, I guess? Smaller? Maybe it’s just cause I saw it from far away, but it just looks comfier than my behemoth. Perhaps JoCo is secretly a massive giant with a disproportionate torso.
edit: Wasn’t sure if I could ask this here, btw. I also saw in his View from Behind a Beard video that he appears to restring his guitar before each performance? Do you guys think he brings two guitars to each show, or backup strings or whatnot? Or maybe he’d borrow Storm’s guitar if he was desperate for a guitar? You never know what misfortunes could be wrought upon a JoCo concert, and if worst came to worst, what would he do?
(side note: In that same vid, was the ZenDrum already on JoCo’s bed when he arrived at his room? What the dillio?)

ParticipantWhats in Jonathan Coultons studio?
Most recording is done on a Digi 002 with Pro Tools LE on a Mac G4 desktop. I also use Ableton Live, Apple Soundtrack and Garageband for loopy things and other digital manipulation. Drums are frequently from either the Reel Drums collection or Discrete Drums. The studio room itself has these items in it:
Martin 000C-16RGTE cutaway acoustic guitar
Gibson Les Paul Studio electric guitar
Fender American Stratocaster (bought new in 2006)
Deering Good Time banjo
Mid-Missouri M-11 Mandolin
Mele Tenor Ukulele
The cheapest Fender electric bass they had in the store
Ditto for the acoustic bass (some kind of Dean cheapie)
Wechter Scheerhorn resonator guitar
Moog Etherwave theremin
Ensoniq MR-Rack sound module
dbx 376 tube channel strip
Line6 Pod Pro guitar amp modeler
Behringer Bass V-Amp Pro bass amp modeler
AT-4040
Shure KSM32
Shure BG 4.0
Shure SM 58 (but of course)May 4, 2008 at 11:51 am #36802Bry
ParticipantTo clarify — awryone’s getting that from JoCo’s FAQ. (I don’t know when that FAQ was written, nor what JC’s been supplementing the list with since.)
I do not know for certain that JoCo does not have an auto-tuner, but I know he does not always play with a guitar that has an auto-tuner [and there exists at least one sheep with one black side]. awryone, mtgordon, and I were all in Northampton, April 3, when he tuned manually between songs (in fact, he spent some time turning the wrong peg). Here‘s Mark’s video of that.
For some reason, I seem to have been under the impression that JoCo, P, and S sometimes bring 3 guitars (I think maybe they did that at the Birchmere, last August) – one for Storm, one for JoCo, one for Paul to wear as a prop. I don’t know if that actually ever happened (my memory’s lousy, but I think Paul was not using JoCo’s guitar), but in Northampton, only two guitars made an appearance.
I’m sure that in a crisis, JoCo would borrow Storm’s guitar rather than go a capella for the whole show, but, y’know, all three of them have spent a lot of their lives in a capella groups, and Paul and Storm are especially experienced with impromptu a capella arrangements (they were half of Da Vinci’s Notebook, and a regular segment of the old DVN shows was taking audience requests).
…actually, I think I’d pay double to see them do a whole show a capella. Oh, wow. Someone set that up, please?

ParticipantBry, is that last sentence a request to commit a terrorist act upon three guitars and create the necessary crisis?
May 4, 2008 at 9:09 pm #36836CoolJammer00
Participantnot an auto tuner, so much as a built in one. i’ve seen those on acousto-electric guitars.
May 4, 2008 at 9:12 pm #36837CoolJammer00
Participantwell, if that is still his guitar, then yes, he does have a built in tuner.
he also has a buttload of money, cause the guitar is almost two grand.

Nnnnnnwait, is kidnapping considered a terrorist act? Then maybe. 😉
well, if that is still his guitar
Which one are you referring to — the one from mtgordon’s video, or one of the ones listed in the FAQ entry?
May 4, 2008 at 9:45 pm #36845CoolJammer00
Participantthe one listed in his faq. I googled it, and it’s a fine piece of work. It is smaller, as I thought. Also, it has a built in tuner.
Cost alot though.
