ThatGuyParticipantI know I stand around near conversations waiting for a moment where something comes up that I feel I can comment on and so join in politely. I dislike bursting into an exising conversation, or being in a conversation that I don’t feel I can contribute to. If that means standing around at the edge for a bit, that’s what I do. It isn’t meant to be creepy.

sgrandysParticipantI adore that we all went from talking about diner to sharing our social awkwardness. I think we are going to do fine with each other!

ParticipantBack on topic: Maybe we should start a Friendly Sea Monkey Dining Brigade. Maybe some sort of sign we can put on our table that says “Yes, you are welcome to join my table! Come sit down and say hello!” 🙂

villiciousParticipant@icemage That’s pretty much how I used the official badge last time around. I mean, if a couple were clearly rapt in conversation, or a table had their heads together speaking intently about something that gave a “not now” vibe, I’d go elsewhere. But in general, if there were happy chatty Sea Monkeys at a table with a free seat, and I wanted to sit with people instead of alone, I’d say hello and ask if I could join.
I’m nearly 100% “I” on the Meyers-Briggs introvert/extrovert scale. Normally at any kind of convention I have to go to my room or somewhere else by myself to recuperate. JoCo Cruise Crazy 2011 is literally the only kind of event where I haven’t needed to (or wanted to) do that. Everyone was really, really friendly and welcoming.January 18, 2012 at 3:46 am #80335Uisce Beatha
ParticipantI’m not so great with starting conversations with new people either, even if they are fellow geeky types (probably why I only met maybe 12-15 people on the cruise last year). I’m perfectly happy to chat if any of you start talking to me though. I’ll be sure to proudly display my badge or geeky t-shirt for identification purposes!

RandalSchwartzParticipantBy the way, if you want to mimic the Lido waitstaff, the new colors are: Orange Polo Shirt, black pants. I think you could have some fun walking around pretending to clean tables and stuff that way. But I’m weird. 🙂

Participant@Icemage I was thinking we could use a stick or coaster with red and green ends like they use in churrascarias to indicate “no more meat” / “please bring on the meat!”.

Participant@n_plus_one That might work, but those coasters are sort of small and unobtrusive. Whatever it is needs to be portable, too. Maybe some sort of laminated accordion-style foldout sign that can fit in a wallet and put away when not in use.

AngelasticParticipant“Yes, you are welcome to join my table! Come sit down and say hello!” seemed to be the default on the last cruise. All we really need is a “Monkey needs alone time to eat bananas on a cruise line!” sign.

Participant@Icemage I’ve only seen the coasters at one place. The place I used to frequent had little cylinders you stood on end, which were much more visible. Not that that’s a useful alternative for us…
@Angelastic Going back to the “Some Sea Monkeys may be shy and/or introverted” discussion I personally prefer a more explicit invitation before I (offer to) foist myself on someone. I don’t mind if someone asks to join me, in fact I appreciate it, but I am very reluctant to presume that all Sea Monkeys feel likewise.January 19, 2012 at 9:22 pm #80423stevendj
ParticipantAs long as everyone knows the fez code, we’re fine.
A fez on the table means that you’re welcome to join me. Once all the seats are taken, the fez goes under the seat.
If the tassel is on the left side, it means I’m attracted to women. If the tassel is on the right, I’m still attracted to women–sexual orientation is innate, not sartorial. And if the tassel is straight up, that means I’m really, really attracted to a woman right now.

mtgordonParticipantIs “tassel” a new euphemism?
January 20, 2012 at 12:10 am #80441
villiciousParticipant@stevendj @isildur42 While I think this (and really any idea that’s been pitched so far) is a great idea in theory, I wonder how it’ll work in practice. The fez code is really only useful if 100% of Sea Monkeys are following it. A fraction of Sea Monkeys are active on this board, and not every Sea Monkey may have a fez (or be willing to tote it back and forth to meals).
So, if there’s no fez on the table, does that mean that person would prefer to be alone? Or are the other seats all taken by people who are still getting food? Or do they just not have a fez/forgot to bring it to lunch/is totally open to meeting new people but would prefer not to participate in some kind of overt sit with me/don’t sit with me code?

GrimoireParticipantMaybe we should just make paper cut outs of these:
