I’ve spent a good amount of time digging around in the Wiki, trying to figure out what to do with this, if anything. I’m lost though, so I figured I’d just post about it here, and if the good Wiki People think it’s worth adding, they may do so.

I was doing a little basic Coulton related research today (watching videos, y’know), and became interested in finding the oldest videos out there. On youtube, I found this video which says it is from PopTech 2006 (the Wiki would have told me the truth of course, but I didn’t think to look there first). Looking at his appearance (short hair!) and general nervous seeming stage presence, I knew that couldn’t be right. So I hit google and tried to find PopTech performance videos.

I quickly found actual PopTech 2006 videos (trademark Furry JoCo appearance intact), but couldn’t find anything earlier. I found plenty of references to his appearance at PopTech 2003, and how historic it was in the JoCo-verse. Even found one link to said performance, which turned out to be dead (damn!).

Anyway I eventually found myself on a page of videos featuring a fellow named Aubrey de Grey:

He’s even furrier than Dr. Coulton himself!

If you scroll down a bit you find a video with the caption: “Aubrey de Grey at PopTech! 2003. The forward looking song “It’s Gonna Be the Future Soon” by Johnathan Colton is a must hear.” Note the mispelling of BOTH of JoCo’s names, making googling more difficult!

The video starts with Coulton singing The Future Soon, the same performance that is on youtube mislabled as 2006. There are a couple of differences. One (most important), much much better sound quality. Two, it doesn’t cut off immediately so you get crowd reaction, and then a long speech by Aubrey de Grey.

This is all my lengthy way of saying, “Hey, this historic video should be on the Wiki! And if you’re a die-hard JoCo fan (and if you’re not, why are you reading this :), you should have it on your hard-drive/iPod.”

If this is already well documented and on the Wiki, then forget I said anything. I looked though, and didn’t find it. I’d love to find videos of his other songs at PopTech 2003, as well.

Also, anyone know how to split a mp4 file without losing any quality? It’s a huge file (111 MB), and all I want is JoCo’s 5 minutes, not de Grey’s 45.

The YouTube link you have above is on JoCopedia; “Methuselah”‘s page is not. I’m gonna load the video and see what I can do with QTPro.

i think it’s on the wiki that the youtube video is mislabelled. or at least, I saw it somewhere that the video, while great, is a few years earlier than it says.

edit: whoops, you said that. anyway, the video link seems to be dead.

Great find, Jmonkee! I don’t believe it’s on the wiki, for the reason that JoCopedia editor Wesley is a “Future Soon” diehard and has been trying to dig up all sorts of information about it. I’m not sure if I can help with the actual question, but that totally should be added to the wiki somewhere (both the video(s) and the info you’ve found, I mean) — we probably need some kind of page on Pop!Tech, I guess.

(Wesley’s handiwork can be seen on the Videos page for “The Future Soon”, where he does indeed point out that that video is mislabeled “2006.”)

OK, I was able to cut it apart. I grabbed the woman saying JoCo’s name twice and the pan to the crowd. I’m gonna save to mp4 and upload to YouTube.

    How exciting!

Nice, Mitch! Can you post it as a video response to the other version, maybe? (I’ve never put anything on YouTube, so I don’t know if that’s a possibility.)

Hrm, I could have done that. Little late. I did put a Comment on the first one about this version w/ better audio. It does sound GREAT. Man, it’s really something to hear all the subtle differences in his performance then as opposed to now; it really does sound like a less confident man up there. Watch the way he quickly tries to unplug the guitar and scamper off the stage. 😀

Thanks so much for finding this JMonkee, I’m considering it an honor to even be the one to “house” it on YouTube.

ETA: I found the way to “video respond”. I don’t know how long it takes to show.

Looks like you might still be able to — see this YouTube help page. But maybe you’ve tried it already and it doesn’t work — what do I know?

    ETA: Edit-ninja’d!

hmph. I just wish the video wasn’t mislabelled on Mr. De Grey’s page. Oh well.

I’m sure fans of Johnathan Colton appreciate it. Whoever that guy is.

True! I remember thinking that when I first saw him perform in late 2006 to a little crowd of maybe 30 or 40 people. Back then, he didn’t perform his songs so much as just sing them. My, how our boy has grown!

    I love this place!

I was thinking this would have maybe a comment or two, or everyone saying “You blockhead, that’s already on the wiki. Everyone knows that!” Instead, I leave for a couple hours, come back, and the video is all cut up and on youtube already.

    JoCo fans rule.

Thanks for tracking that down Jmonkee. I’ve seen that video on youtube and had the same suspicions about it as you but never did the legwork to figure it out. Great job!
