ParticipantOh Bryyyyyy….how hard would it be for you to get a chat room set up in here? Seems like a lot of folks live here anyways, I would love to chat more directly to them. Just looking at the word association page made me think that it would be a great idea.
*sigh* like I need another excuse not to do my homework for college…or the housework ( as if I ever do that)…or my art…

mtgordonParticipantIRC keeps coming up…

ParticipantHey, JoAnn! A chat’s not a bad idea, though I’m not clear what precisely you mean by “in here” — in the forums (like on the sidebar or something) or for the forums (but hosted offsite)? If the latter, there is, as Mark says, an IRC channel that’s been set up — here‘s the thread about that. (It functions properly, but for various reasons it’s never gotten up and running — for one, it requires more software to run, and for another, because nobody hangs out there, nobody else goes there, which is to say if there were a crowd already, there’d be more reason for people to enter.)
If you mean “in the forums,” I really don’t know how hard that would be, to tell the truth. (Actually, to answer the question you asked, I know exactly how hard it would be for me — I’d have to figure out what software JoCo would have to install and e-mail him requesting he install it, then wait.*) It would depend largely, I think, on what kind of extensions have been written for the forum software (Vanilla) — here are a few possibilities, but I haven’t investigated in the slightest.
Do people think this is a good idea? I have no objections, but I probably wouldn’t be much active in a chat (witness my notable absence from the “word association” thread) — I don’t think quickly enough on my feet. Obviously it isn’t a question of one-or-the-other, but I much prefer the forum format to a chatroom [I like organization, and of course I have a lot more power this way 😉 (but seriously that’s true) ].
*(Speaking of the power I have…) To clear up a popular misconception, I have no server-side access to the forum — hence the title “User Administrator,” meaning, “Random guy who can edit posts”, not to be confused with a “sysadmin” (system[s] administrator), who would actually maintain the software, etc., itself. No one but JoCo has direct control over the forum database, software, extensions, and all that.
[Also, if this were a chat, I wouldn’t have been able to spend twenty minutes writing a post.]

mtgordonParticipantI hang out in IRC during the daytime on weekdays (i.e. when I’m at work, since I use IRC a lot at work). There’s pretty much never any traffic, but as long as I’m there, it’s not completely empty.

ParticipantIt sounds like fun. It would be like one big guild chat like from WoW, but here!
April 14, 2008 at 10:02 am #33879shaggyJD
ParticipantBut what if we’re playing WoW at the time people want to chat? In-game UI mod?

ParticipantUm..ok, totally non-techie type person here.
A button from either the forums page or from Jonathans home page that would send me/us straight to an area where we can live talk/type to each other. I didn’t know about the IRC thingie..cause I don’t know what it is. I will go there if others are there too, but then if they are techno-wimps like me they probably don’t know about it either.
And you Bry, being fixer of problems here (at least to my admiring eyes) seemed like the best person to ask! :o)

ParticipantAn AIM chatroom wouldn’t be hard at all to set up, but I’m not sure how many of us actually use AIM.
April 14, 2008 at 10:53 am #33887
Jon WhoParticipantWell as of last night, I now have AIM. Lol.
April 14, 2008 at 11:12 am #33892BenS
ParticipantI am sure most of us use MSN/Yahoo/GTalk/etc and almost without exception i would not dream of using their own specially made messenger programs if you use Pidgin (formally Gaim)/Trillion/Adium (Mac version of Pidgin)/etc then it is very easy to just add another account to it and it is free to make an AIM account so i don’t see why most people wouldn’t. If at work we can always use http://www.meebo.com (quick dig for where my bro works there).

Jon WhoParticipantThe only thing I dislike about AIM, is the stupid internet page it opens every time…that and the fact nobody’s there of course.
April 14, 2008 at 11:26 am #33894Phyz
ParticipantThen get Pidgin >_> Ever since I started using it, I haven’t gone back to vanilla AIM. It’s cleaner, simpler, has no ads, and is just all-around better.
April 14, 2008 at 11:29 am #33895
mtgordonParticipantI use Pidgin under Linux, AIM under Windows, and iChat under OS X.
(I’m rupertmonkee on AIM, FWIW)

Jon WhoParticipantATM, this isn’t my machine (brother screwed that up) so I’m a little hesitant to install MORE stuff. Anyone on Skype too?
April 14, 2008 at 11:34 am #33899
mtgordonParticipantI’m on Skype once in a great while, but not often: mark.th.gordon
