Just, you know, so I get the appropriate l33t cred, I recognised the first quote from the thing robgonzo linked to, had heard the Four Yorkshireman thing before but didn’t recognise it, because I was looking for ‘Jenny and the wimp’ and had completely skipped over Covenant’s comment in terms of reference-searching, since competing to be the oldest/least fortunate old fart is such a common thing to do that I didn’t realise it was referring to anything specific. When I was a lad, I had to walk uphill (both ways) in the snow with paper bags on my feet just to catch a glimpse of a single Yorkshireman.
(Actually, when I was a kid, we didn’t have such luxuries as snow or Yorkshiremen. True story. We did have paper bags and hills, though, so I guess I wasn’t too hard-up.)
