I’ll bite the bullet and expand a bit more on the recording point. There was some really good and long discussions about this on Twit-arrr, which is why I was gonna create a thread (and I probably still will), but there’s enough discussion here that it would be silly to ignore.
At least from the wording that Jonathan used, they didn’t ask because of copyright concerns, use in future performances, etc. I would have opinions on those matters, but I’d like to focus on the reasoning given: That we think you will enjoy the show more if you don’t record it. I disagree with that surface level point so strongly. Personally, I find that the memories that come with going back through JCCC video footage are particularly strong and emotional, and I am also the type of person who often misses things the first time I experience them, picking up so much more on subsequent viewings. By announcing it the way they did, I heard two things. First, “We don’t think the way you experience our show is valid”. And second, “You are not allowed to experience this show if you are not a Sea Monkey”. To summarize my feelings, the Watkins show ended with a Commander Thinks Aloud level performance, and now no one will ever be able to experience just how amazing that particular ensemble of The Gambler is again. That REALLY bothers me.
