When I was an undergrad at Case Tech — a geeky engineering school — we had a yearly film festival which helped us catch up and keep up with the latest in geek culture (though it was not called that at the time). 3 full days of cult classics plus the latest viral stuff. You came out of it with a real education — sufficient to help you get most of the jokes and references that were being made around you. I and my girlfriend at the time (not the woman I ultimately married, but a smart and attractive astronomy major who’s very much a geek to this day), brought sleeping bags and camped out on the floor of the auditorium. Maybe there should be a similar “crash course” for the rest of us — in meatspace, on the Internet, or both.
