Regarding the hardware, I suspect status.net would not fit on a plug computer. It depends on the particular hardware of course, but the memory and storage requirements would probably exceed most reasonably priced plug computer’s specs. A netbook is probably a good compromise. They are cheap, reasonably powerful, can have up to 2GB of RAM, and have more than enough storage.
I have a status.net instance on a VM at home, but nothing public right now. I think it is a good idea if others were to have their own instances. Spread the knowledge around a bit. I’m not a Linux guru by any stretch of the imagination, so someone who is more Linux savvy with a status.net instance is a good thing.
Hopefully we will hear back from @paulandstorm soon regarding HAL’s position on us running a server. It would be best to have the server up and running and publicly accessible on the real hardware a couple of weeks before the cruise to iron out any wrinkles. I wouldn’t want to spend a bunch of time and money on this if they come back and say no-go.
If I get time this weekend, I might try and get another public status.net server up and running in an EC2 instance.
