And then there’s the corporate policy thing…
Coke-serving restaurants are required to correct people who ask for Pepsi with something along the lines of “We don’t have Pepsi, is Coke ok?” and Pepsi-serving restaurants are required to correct people who ask for a Coke with something along the lines of “We don’t have Coke, is Pepsi ok?”… oddly enough, Coca-Cola is who does most of the enforcing of this, actually sending people in to Pepsi-serving places and asking for Cokes. If the server doesn’t utter the magic words, that restaurant will likely receive a cease-and-desist letter from Coke’s legal department.
(“I’d like a cheeseburger and a Coke, please?” “No Coke, Pepsi.” “Okay, Pepsi, then.” “Cheeburger, Cheeburger! Pepsi, Pepsi!”)
The absolute worst thing I can hear in a restaurant at the time of a drink order is “We don’t have Dr. Pepper. Is Mr. Pibb okay?” “No, it is not. Iced tea, please.” Mr. Pibb is yucky and should only be consumed when there is no other choice (including river water filtered through a dirty sock) available. 😉
