Liquid in first, ice cream scoops intact: float, usually.
Ice cream in first, then carbonated liquid, soda. (my family has a tradition of strawberry sodas on July 4).
Ice cream scoops blended into said beverage like a shake, but with carbonated beverage instead of milk: freeze.
I worked at Braum’s for a couple years, flippin’ burgers and dippin’ ice cream. We made freezes like described above, sodas by taking a bit of flavor syrup, a tiny bit of ice cream, and some seltzer/soda/carbonated water, blending that, then finishing with ice cream scoops, another shot of seltzer, whipped cream, cherry. Floats were simply a cup of soda with a scoop or two of ice cream floated on top.
Ahh, looking at the Braum’s website, freezes are now called smoothies. ::sigh::
