As a reminder (and because it’s come up a couple times in emails to us): the final decision as to “what’s formal enough” will rest with the maitre d’ and restaurant manager(s) that evening. We (JCCC management) will not intercede, and will abide by the HAL staff’s decision(s).
That said, we will give them *plenty* of warning that our crowd is…unique; and will do our best to work with them beforehand to get them to use as liberal definition of what constitutes “formal” as possible.
A good general rule of thumb we suggest is that whatever you wear should look more “dressy/nice” than “costume-y.” Jacket and tie w/utilikilt? Sounds good to us. Formal Victorian wear with light steampunk touches? You’re probably fine. Full Optimus Prime outfit, but with a bowtie? Maybe not so much.
We are by no means discouraging anyone’s creativity and personal tastes here; we just want it clear ahead of time that whatever line is drawn will be drawn by HAL, not by us. Just trying to avoid potential disappointment and/or ill feeling.
