That might depend on a few factors.
- Is there a free client in the iTunes app store? – Yes and for android as well. Search for status.net
- Is it faster to go to the web, or open the app? – Hard to say at this point, and will depend on preference
- Is the app mature enough to be useful and stable? – Seems to be. It’s not perfect (on iPhone) but does most things well. Try pointing it at http://grimstatusnet.dyndns.org/statusnet/
- Are there any administrative hoops we’ll have to jump through to get the app working on a LAN? – Hopefully not. Assuming everything works as expected we’ll just have to pass around a static IP for people to use
