ETA: In retrospect, maybe it was a translation/Chinese whispers problem. “What, the Americans want to put Canons in space? Well, we’ll trump that with a Leica.”
Actually, they started off by saying “let’s put Nikon there!”, thus giving their tiny silver balls a name. They sent Leica up later. 😀
