I’ve taken my 11-year-old daughter to the last couple of shows, and I’ll be taking her to the S.F. one this weekend. I’ve sort of decided that I think it’s better to expose her to funny, talented artists like JoCo than to worry about if she hears a bad word or two in the course of a two-hour show. So far at least, she doesn’t seem to have suffered any harm. It’s hardly worse than what she’s already watching on The Simpsons.

My wife, on the other hand, gets a stomach ache at the thought of sitting there while (she feels) the entire room full of people, onstage and in the audience, glares disapprovingly at her for having brought a kid to the show. As near as I can tell though, the performers don’t do anything differently when a kid’s in the audience than when she’s not, so that doesn’t seem to be an issue. Doesn’t make my wife’s stomach ache go away though. 😉

My daughter’s heard “First of May” live once and had pretty much no idea what was going on in the song other than that it was somehow dirty, which made it even cooler for her. We don’t play that one on the iPod in the car, so again, I figure if the price of her going to the show is to let her hear “First of May” roughly once a year, I’m OK with that.
