This looks like as good a thread as any to ask this question…
I’m seriously considering getting myself a bass. Specifically, being the deviant, non-conforming, ukulele-melodica-recorder-wielding non-guitarist that I am, I’ve been considering an Ashbory Bass. It’s an ultra-short 18″-scale fretless bass with rubber silicone strings, and a surprisingly acoustic sound. It also seems to be the bass-of-choice for accompanying ukuleles, if Youtube has anything to say about it. You can hear it, for example, playing The Entertainer, the Brahms Hungarian Rhapsody, and the original Star Trek Theme.
Does anyone (maybe Paul Potts?) have any experience with (or opinions about) this instrument? I know next to nothing about electric guitar type of instruments, but I’m not too concerned about amps at the moment, since, at least for the near future, I’d always be running it directly into my computer (technically: into my M-Audio external soundcard). I’m not planning to use it for live performance, just recording and noodling around on.
One concern is that the high G-string is notorious for snapping at random times (not usually while playing) and needing to be replaced. One workaround I’ve read about, though, is to replace the standard strings with these, which from all accounts, are made of a more durable material.
