To bring in the new year, I decided to act on a suggestion that there weren’t enough a capella covers JoCo songs. As a result, I present a newly-recorded a capella version of I Feel Fantastic — complete with my first attempt at beatboxing. There’s also parts for bass, two filler-chord “guitar” parts, two high treble parts, and of course, the lead and harmony vocals, and various vocal echos (“right now!”). By in large, I tried to follow the layout of the original, but I didn’t refer to any source tracks, just the completed version.

A couple fun facts:
– The high treble parts are mostly in parallel fourths to emulate electric guitar power chords, which, for the most part follows the bass line (only two octaves higher).
– The highest note in the treble parts reaches the f# on the *top* of the treble staff (it’s triple tracked to help correct for pitch inaccuracies and to add a chorus effect).
– It’s not always obvious, but the drum pattern in the chorus is supposed to be subtly different — it should sound like a cymbal or hi-hat is present, *in addition* to the kick and snare. That was all recorded at once (i.e. not multi-tracked) by changing my beatbox pattern from “Buh Buh pff” to “Bsh Buh Psh”.
– The reversed drum and bass sounds were recorded as they sound (i.e. no audio was reversed).
