Ah, Depression food… onion soup was a biggie for us when I was extremely young and my mother was still a single parent. When what you have is some onions and maybe some bouillon it pays to get creative (milk toast was our standard substitute for packaged cereals). I myself became a single parent when I was living in the UK. I spent a lot of money on sitters so I could work. Fortunately there was a chicken processing factory in Brackley near where I lived and they let me take away cast-off parts for a few p. I’d live on chicken bog rice. A couple of £ would feed me for a week. That was long-ago when I was rail-thin. A few experiences like that and I tend to indulge when times allow it. I still love the chicken bog rice, though.
