The tea on crackers thing my mom fed us was for when you were so sick you couldn’t really hold anything down- it usually worked. Think of people with morning sickness nibbling crackers to quell nausea. It was also a very typical depression age “meal” from her childhood. When she was a girl in the 30’s, her father dead 6 weeks before her birth from influenza, she, her mom and sister were very poor, and there were times when all they had was tea, crackers and, if lucky, a bit of margerine to put to top. It was the kind of margerine that was pure white, looked like lard, and came with a yellow color pill you had to crush and mix with the stuff to get it to look yellow like butter. Tea over crackers was a “hot” meal, and at least filled them for a while.
