well mr fancy pants i have always understood is a sort of a flash-fiction look at the dangers of obsession, and building your identity out of your accomplishments. it just describes this one little scene. i think it’s kind of neat.
i didn’t vote for it, though.
re. a talk with george, the sort of general idea of the song is all well and good, but it’s much easier to start a magazine and fly out to the congo for a boxing match and so on if you’re born rich. in the world in which normal people exist, there are limits and harsh realities to be faced.
there are really two strong contenders on that list, in my mind. the first is madelaine. there’s a lot to love about this song – the strong tempo, the interesting and effective bass line, and some great lyrics including one of my all-time favorite lines from a song ever anyway.
however, in the end i just had to go with the delightful confection that is lady aberlin’s muumuu. musically, it’s gentle, relaxing, tuneful, and melodic. lyrically it’s even more interesting. it’s got a lot to say about nostalgia, innocence and imagination. love songs can be great, yes, but you’ve got to give props to the successful musical exploration of the many other themes and emotions that comprise the human experience.
although, i wonder if anyone’s going to read this far down when the poll appears right at the top.
