I have been rereading and cooking through, Like Water for Chocolate food for the mind and belly.
I just added Hunter Quatermain’s Story, a collection of Allan Quatermain short stories, to my H. Rider Haggard collection.
King Solomon’s Mines is one of Haggards earlier novels, he does get much better. I agree that there is a lot of politically incorrect language that was common at the time the novels were written, but beyond that you can see he had a deep love and respect for the people and cultures of Africa. He even acknowledges the cultural bias and points out his flaws in Montezuma’s Daughter, the novel that got me hooked on Haggard. It was story telling that made me feel the way Dumas novels did.
I’m also reading The Children of Llyr one of Evangeline Waltons novelizations of The Mabinogion. She does a good job of fleshing out the old stories.
Dr. Science ‘s Book of Shocking Domestic Revelations has a permanent place on my nightstand.
