Wow. There’s just nothing in the constitution that explains the role of the VP, other than as Pres. of the Senate.
In the original, yeah. The understudy role wasn’t even formally spelled out until the 12th amendment, IIRC, before which the VP was whoever came in second in the election. With Washington-Adams, that wasn’t a problem, but with Adams-Jefferson, the flaws in the arrangement became clear.
