like, if a nymph tries to cast a spell on you to make you do what it wants, you would roll a die and add some bonuses and measure that against the nymph's die roll and bonuses to determine whether the spell works. if it does work, that's called failing your "saving throw" (ie, throw of the die to save your character from the spell, type of thing).
i feel like i've mentioned my stealing of his sharpie in the middle of the philly signing before. i managed to conduct myself almost like a human being while interacting with him, other than that.
course the first show i went to was joe's pub in nyc. during the opening act i got up to hit the head and he was standing by the front door, such that to get to the bathroom i had to go past within like two feet of him. this was also, i believe, the first time i ever saw him in person. i kind of have similarly thick wavy hair as he does, although i'm more of a dirty blond than actually brown, and at the time i was rocking a chinstrap beard, so i spent the rest of the night alternately worrying that he'd think i was trying to look like him (which i wasn't, for the record) and giggling with childlike glee ('heehee! i came within two feet of jonathan coulton!'), much to the dismay of the other couple we went with.
it's not like that's a situation where it would have been really expected that i'd try and chat him up, so it wasn't entirely an awkward flee-to-safety thing, but i probably did at least look like i'd been stunned for 1d4 rounds.
