It was an idle idea I came up with in another topic where someone builds a web app that allows users to specify parameters about a song they want to hear and (and this is the important part) to associate a PayPal amount with their request. For example, I could say I want JeffM to make a new disco/grunge rock song about box turtles who love summer squash, and I’d be willing to pay $1 for that song. Someone else comes along and thinks that sounds like a good song, so they pledge $1. If JeffM writes the song, and the users like it (how to measure that was never figured out in the original discussion), then JeffM gets to pocket the accumulated PayPal total. So, it’s like commissioning a song, but a single person doesn’t have to pony up $1000, or whatever it would cost to commission a song by yourself. You get to crowd-source it a bit.
I’m not sure it’s a great idea, but it was a lively discussion.
