I’m not sure I’d lump Vegemite in with the Marmites, that’s kinda like saying Pepsi is a kind of Coke.
Pepsi is a kind of cola. Maybe I should have said, ‘yeast spreads’ but I thought all these British people would be more likely to know what I was talking about if I said Marmites.
I never had a strong opinion, since I’d never directly compared them. But now I’ve compared many different kinds at one sitting, and although I still don’t have strong opinions on all of them, I’d have to say the UK Marmite is my least favourite, it’s too salty. You can find it in NZ under the name ‘Old Mate’, at least, it seems like the same thing to me. It’s a pity I never noticed Promite, it would have been nice to add that to the tasty yeasty taste test.
