No I meant more like the meaning shift for the first two. (Understand vs stand) Closest examples I could think off OTTOMH
I see what you mean re:the lay/lady example but I meant more that the bit that sounds the same is offset i.e. similar to speak/weekends, its the first bit.

And thats far too nitpicky for a Monday morning Bry! You made my brains melt for a while there til I figured out what you meant.

I ain’t here to wax lyrical about the whys and wherefores of English, just to appreciate the clever little bits in his songs. Sif I’d know what they are called! I mentioned earlier how lax the English curriculum is here in NZ. I learned more about verbs/adjectives/past participles in French class than I did in English. Our English syllabus consisted mainly of comparing Mad Max and Tank Girl (awesome), or reading To Kill A Mockingbird outloud as a class (very unawesome. I switched out of that class in the second week when I realised I’d nearly finished the book and the rest of the class asked if we could read it outloud chapter by chapter each week /headdesk).

I exaggerate, there was some Shakespeare in there somewhere but not much actual grammar if at all, but yeah, we aren’t exactly producing English scholars over here 🙁 And I can say that, I got the highest mark in the country in Std 4 (Year/Grade 6) and second highest mark in my school in Bursary (University Entrance exams, Year/Grade 13) As far as people who speak gooder English over here, I’m considered gooderer than most and I’m appalled/appalling.
