Mine also does that, but since both (all three, if you include the iPod) of my firewire hard drives are powered from the firewire without any external power source, I can’t actually plug one into the other, because there’s not enough power coming from a single firewire port to power them both. At least, I assume that’s why it doesn’t work. So I thought I’d get a powered firewire hub, the old-fashioned going-into-a-store way because I’ve had to mail too many faulty or otherwise unusable products back to online retailers lately and it’s a pain. My plan didn’t work, but I did get a nice shiny new dictionary (I can never resist them) from one of the electronics shops which had cunningly added a range of books just to tempt me.

ETA: Actually, it did occur to me that I could get a powered-from-the-mains firewire hard drive with some extra ports on it, instead of a hub. But I already bought a powered-from-the-mains USB2.0 hard drive a couple of months ago for backups, and although it is almost full, it’s only almost full because I have multiple copies of various crap on it. And if I really wanted another big powered-from-the-main-for-backups hard drive, I’d have to at least consider getting a Time Capsule so that I wouldn’t actually have to plug my Mac into it. And that’s all just too much thinking when all I really want is a cheap little firewire hub.
