i feel like part of the reason some men get so insane over sports is because they use it as a way to assert their masculinity, so any challenge to their sports opinions is, in their minds, a challenge to their masculinity. for many people, this is the gravest insult it is possible to deliver.
course, i'm not sure how female sports psychopaths fit into this model. possibly it's a matter of constructing one's identity around a particular team or event, so any question of the merits of that team/event appears to be an ad hominem attack. also, people who share a similar intensity of psychosis over sports will tend to bond over it and reinforce each other's behavior, so there's that social aspect again, albeit in a somewhat twisted form.
also, people like to get drunk at sporting events.
