I should say something about the end of this segment, which I’ve left tacked onto this interview. Our original plan, as you see, was that we’d record three segments: Childhood and School, Pre-TAW (including undocumented songs), and TAW and Beyond. When the interview started, though, we were completely flying by ear. At the point that you hear as the end of this segment, my laptop served the only useful purpose it did all interview by displaying how long we’d been recording, which was running onto an hour, and JoCo was starting to look a little fidgety. It was about noon-thirty, and the diner that we’d thought would be deserted at 10 was starting to fill up. We were supposed to keep going with no break through the last section, but I really wanted to break, and I was just hoping like crazy to get us to a decent end point. (And, of course, I had no way of alerting Jinx to my sudden change in plan.) Somehow or other we pulled it off, though. Definitely the most stressful part of the interview, for me.
And so after all my worries about getting a clean break, I decided to ruin it by including the clip of the next few seconds while the tape kept rolling. But Jinx and I agree it gives an idea of how genuinely thoughtful Jonathan is, if the mere fact of his giving us three hours of his time doesn’t say enough.
Here is the Internet Archive audio, here the transcription — don’t know if anyone needs it on Odeo, but I’ll upload there if requested.
I hope you’re licking your chops for Part 5, or the Fifth Billy Goat Gruff as I call it. (Definitely the tastiest of all.)
