Well, Melissa Etheridge has made an entire career out of writing songs about doubt and failure in relationships, even during the period where she was supposedly deriliously happy in her relationship with Julie Cypher. However, she has said that whenever she needed it, she was always capable of going back into that dark little room in her heart and pull on it, because once you’ve been in that emotional state, it’s got a permanent address somewhere in there.
Of course, now her relationship dissolved and she’s also a cancer survivor, so the woman has plenty of angst to draw from again, but that’s neither here nor there.
