Minnesota and Wisconsin (i.e. the states where I lived prior to moving to Massachusetts) have freeways. Further east you start running into toll roads, at which point they’re arguably no longer “free”, and they’re more often described as turnpikes.
I think “and everybody’s grandma has a gun” scans better.
