Alright guys, here’s version 2!
Ride a beaver or hop the fence
Neither way makes too much sense
Take a plane or drive a car if you wanna go
Smuggle beer in if you think
That you’ll want a decent drink
Cause everything is different over thereGo to a Walmart or a mall
They’ll sell you anything at all
And noone will say Hey, you’ve spent too much today
Enjoy your meals in supersize
With extra pop and extra fries
But I hope you don’t want a Timbit
Cause they don’t have a Tim Horton’s over there
(hold up sign saying Actually, according to timhortons.com, there are over 340 Tim Hortons locations in the United States.)CHORUS
Over there
You’ll never feel at ease
Cause their food is all soaked up in grease
And everybody’s grandma owns a gun
Over there
They’ll really make you regret
That Mexico isn’t your neighbour instead
Don’t make me go over thereBRIDGE
Cause over here we’ve got a queen
And over here we’ve got poutine
And we always say we’re sorry
Even though it’s not our fault that we say ‘eh’
I’m sorry…eh?They say a party girl named Paris
Is really dumb but she’s an heiress
You can see her in all the magazines
And there’s a club out in L.A.
Where the men can dance away
But the men all stare
At Paris in her underwear
The underwear she’s in
Is endangered leopard skin
The men just sigh
Go home and think of things they can buy
CHORUS
I feel this has come quite a way. Some changes to note:
-
– Since the second verse’s ‘Noone will say Hey that’s too much Mayonnaise’ actually has backup vocals on the karaoke track, I needed to change the line to something similar-sounding. I like the resulting lyric much better than ‘vegas you can meet/a lot of gamblers in the street’ anyways, but I think it could use some tweaking
– ‘Everybody’s grandma owns a gun’ got pushed into the chorus instead of the wobbling down the stairs line which I was iffy about
– Second part of the chorus got completely changed, away from the original rhyme. Thank you so much, Spiff, for bring up the Canada-Mexico separation. I love this new lyric.
– The bridge now goes ‘Cause over here’ instead of ‘Cause I am glad’. Bry’s suggestion made me think a bit more about it, and I kind of like the contrast of going over here in the bridge versus over there in the rest of the song. The rest of the bridge got re-worded a bit – not sure if it’s for the better though, I might go back to version 1.
– I’m having the most trouble with the last two lines (I kept them italicized). I don’t think it’s a very good lyric, and I’d rather it be something funny than serious, but for the life of me I can’t think of anything light-hearted to end the song with.
I have to get this song out of my head! I’m having trouble focusing on the studying that I need to do right now!
