There are several degrees of audience interaction. Laughter, applause, zombies, at appropriate times, no problem. I suppose it’s also good when the audience gets quieter for the more sentimental songs, and a little background noise to make their getting quiet more evident will be tolerated. Out-of-place arrs, honest-to-goodness heckling, repeated requests for Freebird, shouting during sentimental songs, etc. are presumably less welcome. IMHO, the policy varies with the song. Re Your Brains? Do whatever you like during the chorus; I personally try to moan a harmony part. I’m Your Moon? You Ruined Everything? Save it for later, please. During the actual banter there are typically more attempts at conversation from the audience, especially if he makes an explicit call for requests (which I’ve seen once). Sometimes he asks for feedback from the audience. How many software developers? Shout your lungs out at such times if you like. Just try to be reasonable, consider holding your tongue if you’ve had too much to drink, and everything should be OK.

Oh, and I think it’s Paul that tries to steer the ship into down a notch bay, or Ritalin bay, or whichever bay seems most relevant that day.
