@three08: I know of at least two distinct ways to pronounce L (they’re both found in typical pronunciations of “little”; mouth the word while paying attention to the position of your tongue) and as many as six distinct ways of pronouncing R (with a great deal of variation between speakers based on accent). It is further worth noting that prevocalic and postvocalic R are not necessarily pronounced similarly by a given speaker; a Bostonian can typically pronounce the R in “Red Sox” but will still “pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd.” As I pronounce R, my tongue is nowhere near its position when I pronounce either L.
