Other material you may like, if you love JoCo, all depends on why you love JoCo.
One decent place to find music similar to pretty much any artist you like is pandora. It examines the music you like, and sets up a streaming station that plays music with similar qualities (and allows you to give a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” so it can learn about your tastes).
But the music is not the reason I love JoCo’s songs. (At least, it’s not the primary reason. I do love the music but the music alone isn’t what made me see him live three times in a calendar year.) It’s because they’re geeky. (While pandora recognizes “humorous lyrics” as a song’s component, it doesn’t differentiate between geeky humor and other humor.)
That said, some of the geeky music I like includes:
Arrogant Worms
I wanted to add to c4bl3fl4m3’s comment that if you’re a Moxy Fruvous fan, you’d probably like these guys. Some of my favorites: Santa Got Arrested (it was only a matter time before he was busted for B&E), Carrot Juice Is Murder (a plea to be kind to vegetables), and Lonely Lab of Broken Hearts (a country ditty about a heartbroken scientist).
The Austin Lounge Lizards
They’re a country/bluegrass band whose latest album includes a German rap song. You may want to allow yourself some wikipedia time when you listen to these guys; I’ve had to do some additional research on more than a few of their songs to completely understand them (kinda like I had to do for “A Talk With George”), which inevitably makes me appreciate them that much more. Some of my favorites: Acid Rain, 1984 Blues (“I met my baby, in the Ministry of Love…”), Big Rio Grande River, Shallow End of the Gene Pool, and all of stuff they did for Consumers Union (here and here). If you like JoCo’s “I Feel Fantastic,” check out this Lizards video.
Voltaire
The perfect mix of Goth and comedy (although much of his music isn’t comedic). If your taste in JoCo’s music leans toward the songs about misunderstood monsters and zombies, you’ll get a kick out of Voltaire’s “When You’re Evil,” “Brains!” and “Zombie Prostitute.” If you’re a Trekkie, he’s got an entire EP, Banned on Vulcan, dedicated to Trek. My favorite song of his is “God Thinks,” about religious hypocrisy, but the best introduction to his music is probably his album Boo Hoo, which includes “Irresponsible,” “Future Ex-Girlfriend,” and the aforementioned “Brains!”
