If the goal is to beat everyone else, the best way to do that might be to invest in penny (bulletin board) stocks, as percentage-wise they fluctuate more than large-cap stocks. A 1 cent gain in a 10 cent stock means a 10% gain in your holdings. It's a strategy that I used with some success when I played the same game in high school years ago. Of course this is also a way you could lose a lot of money, but if there is no difference in finishing second or last it's a potential strategy to consider.

If your game allows short-selling (which is basically selling shares of stock that you don't own, and then later buying them to cover your short position) you might want to try that. People do this when they expect the price of stock to go down, and might be a good idea to do with pretty much any stock tip you get through spam e-mail, as they almost exclusively go down after the spam (allowing you to sell it when it's high, and buy it later when it's low. Note that this strategy is not really feasible with penny stocks in real life, for reasons I won't go into, but might work in a game.)

I also have to agree with the other posters, that this is hardly the place to get the best financial advice.
