As a point of contention, I would say that a surprising amount of modern techniques have found influence in pop/rock music, and vice versa. For instance, Tool, as modern music tendancies found in pop/rock, and Knee Play 1 in Einstein on the Beach as the vice versa. Or John Adams I was looking at the Cieling and I saw the Stars. Or Jesus of Suburbia in American Idiot. The fields are becoming cloesr as Postmodernism tries to get away from high modernism, and pop tries to expand beyond what's already been done.
