Reply To: Strange Business Model
I have two reactions — one is that you need to find the way to have a LOT of people come into contact with one of your best-liked songs, and the other is that you need to support the viral activities of your fans.
The best avenue I can think of to sneak into the hearts of many would be to have your song in some kind of inventive & well-liked indie film — the kind that your current audience, as well as more of the mainstream, would be drawn to. How to get access to the smarter echelon of film auteurs I don't know personally, but I bet you could find some kind of contact chain from people you know already.
On viral fandom, just keep asking the fans what they need from you to help them spread the word. Having sent email links to virtually all my friends, I'm starting to talk about you to strangers (the clerk at the bookstore, the Blockbuster browser in line behind me) and I could personally use some kind of ersatz business card kinda thing that would leave them with a seductive image of some kind, and a URL or two.
I love the idea of the homemade giveaway CDs mentioned above. If I had more time and mad skillz, I'd do that too.
