People! New song! They said it would never happen!

A while ago John Scalzi, one of my favorite sci-fi authors (and a pal as well) asked if I would write a theme song for his new novel, Redshirts. I said yes, mostly so I could get a chance to read it. You can read about and listen to what happened next and listen to the song over at as of this morning. You can also check out the whole series of chats about other sci-fi-themed songs of mine that John and I did leading up to today. I’ll be putting Redshirt up in my store soon, and the band and I will be playing it on our June tour. Hooray!

Redshirts is out June 5th, and it’s a fantastic read. BUY IT, AND ALL OTHER THINGS!

Great song. Thanks for making music!

Craig says

Fantastic song. Also, it continues your tradition of collaborating with people named "John."

Jmonkee says

So what are you waiting for? Get it up in your store so I can give you money!

Craig says

What @Jmonkee said.

Haplo says

Jen D. says

Awesome! Can't wait to give you *both* my money.

I found this one strangely moving, in the same vein as You Crush Everything. Excellent.

jordan says

I think this is my new favorite. Im learning it as we speak.

I love it! The chat at was great too. I agree with Scalzi's comments about Jonathan Coulton, Storyteller - you have a knack for creating clever characters in your songs. Now how about a line of JoCo plushies? I'd pick up a redshirt, giant squid and a code monkey immediately!

Looking forward to seeing you in NYC this Saturday!

Can't wait to hear it live. John will be in Philly on June 6th, just a few days before the concert there . . . gonna be a great week for scifi in Philly!!

Chad says

Great song. Definitely a new favorite. Any chance of adding a show in Reno? Come on! You'll be in SF, but I can't get down there that day!

Radd says

Fantastic song... can't wait to add it to my regular rotation. Please accept monies for it soon.

Fin says

You've done it again...

Instant classic.

Tim H says

Beautiful song. Please let me buy it soon.

Calgary Keith says

I love the melody of this song, and really bittersweetly written. Another soon to be JoCo classic.

Generally I don't read post on blogs, however I wish to say that this write-up very pressured me to check out and do so! Your writing style has been amazed me. Thank you, very great post.

Wow - I'd buy that for a dollar.... oh wait...

Jay says

Yikes! Only 20 comments!.....I see a haircut and a real job in your future. ;-) Say it ain't so!

Gwynne says

Bought it. Love it. Is there artwork to go with the song? Didn't seem to be downloaded, and I didn't find any other likely candidates around the net.

Jason says

Heard the song for the first time on Friday at The Birchmere and loved it. I'm a Scalzi fan so I picked-up the book on Saturday and finished it Sunday night. Been listening to the song on a loop, all day today :)

I'm bringing a signed copy of Scalzi's Redshirts to Ann Arbor for you to also sign, as you are the official songsmith of the novel. :)
