He’s a PC

By JoCo May 2, 2006

Hodgman! People are talking about this in the comments of my last post, but this deserves its own. If you watch The Daily Show all the time and you still can’t get enough, relax, there’s plenty to go around. He just did a bunch of TV ads for Apple in which he’s a PC and the guy from Jeepers Creepers 2 is a Mac and they chat about being computers. They’re airing now but you can see all of them on the Apple site. Awesome!

I retract my statement that this is the Year of the Coulton. This is the year of the Coulton AND the Hodgman. Rock on.

Glenn says

Really, it's the Year of the Hoboes. The rest of us are all along for the ride. (So to speak.)

Michael says

Not that I ever assumed JH would *be* PC, but it's interesting to see him as *a* PC.

Eric Ginsberg says

Who's Hodg-Man's agent? Only the best agent in the world! And what's that agent's phone number? Only the best agent's phone number that you're going to e-mail me after reading this comment.

Great ads.

Anyone know the name of the guy being the Mac? He looks familiar, too. Probably, somebody's going to say who it is and I'm going to feel really stupid for not knowing.

Dave says

I love these ads!

And to answer Wilson's question, the guy playing "Mac" is Justin Long (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0519043/), most recently known for the film "Dodgeball" and the TV series "Ed" on NBC.

What I'm trying to figure out is who directed these spots? They look similar to the "Switch" spots that Errol Morris did, but did he direct these too? And when are we going to get the Coulton-as-troubadour ad campaign?

jpez says

Hey, I know that guy!...well, sort of...I read his book!

Dave says

It's terrific to see Hodgeman get this kind of exposure, although I think the ads are a little too "hip" to be gotten by a large part of the market.

I'm surprised that Apple hasn't latched onto "A Laptop Like You" as a the basis for a commercial series. They could do it as a series of product shots or as a series of spots using famous (and not-so-famous) people obviously in love with their Mac laptops. Seeing as the song perfectly captures the technological advantages of the Mac as well as the romance if the product, it just seems like a natural fit.

And, of course, it would further the Coulton/Hodgeman collaberation by having them both as spokesman for the same company. Probably a lot cheaper than what IBM paid for Jagger/Richard.

Thanks, Dave!

Actually, I probably recognized Justin Long from the movie Galaxy Quest, though I did watch some episodes of Ed.

These are great ads, really well made and funny to watch.
Hodgeman looks perfect for the part.
I just wish they weren't so inaccurate, so full of the advertising stereotype Apple wants you to think. But then, that is their job, and they're doing it pretty well.
