"I Hate California" is a song from Jonathan Coulton's debut album Smoking Monkey. The song describes how the singer, well, hates California. How did you guess?

Trivia[edit]

  • Contrary to appearances, Jonathan insists he does not hate California. Instead, "I Hate California" is a break-up song; Jonathan had a girlfriend who was doing a long stretch of living in California working on a musical, and their break-up inspired this song.[1]
  • A brief snippet from "I Hate California" is performed in John Hodgman's "The Areas of My Expertise," as California's state song.
