[...] Also artsy, but less nerdy (well, slightly), I’m in love with yet another man I’ve never met — One Jonathan Coulton of New York, musician and funnyman, and implementer of exactly the kind of music-selling venture that I like to see. He’s got all his songs up on his site for a dollar a piece, via PayPal or Google Checkout (I’m a prophet!) all DRM-free and no bullshit, thus making him a perfect example of why the recording industry as implemented in America and similar places is a completely obsolete piece of shit. (I totally recommend his song “Re: Your Brains”. I laughed until I needed new underwear! Go give him a dollar for it, and check out the *awesome* song-details he provides while you’re there!) Jonathan, the artist, makes near 100% profit on his music, and needs no help whatsoever with distribution. Maybe he could use the services of a marketing firm (no comment on him specifically; just online musicians in general), but he sure doesn’t need to be signing away 98% of his profit-margin to a bunch of assholes who’ll bribe radio-stations for him. And then turn around and sue a ten-year-old girl for listening to his music. Ha! [...]

[...] Anyhow, just to give a little more information, Johnathan Coulton is a Yale alum who does something called ‘Thing a Week’ where he composes and posts a song every week. Recently, he held a Code Monkey remix competition. The top five winner are posted the on a Quick Stop Entertainment, if any of you want to check it out.
[...] Ok, ok so this song is old, but I haven’t heard it in a long time and more importantly, you may have never heard it before. Well today is you lucky day, because you can hear the song for absolutely free, and you know how much I love free things! Go to http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songs and then find Code Monkey. (Hint: When you get to the page, click ctrl-F. That will let you search the page for “Code Monkey”.)
[...] My friend sent me a youtube video of one of Jonathan Coulton’s songs a while back, made using screenshots from the computer game World of Warcraft. That video has, unfortunately, been taken down due to copyright issues (stupid Viacom), but many others still exist. I liked the song (it should be noted that Coulton is not responsible for the WoW videos - someone else did that independently), so I went to Coulton’s website, where he posts a new song every week. His songs somehow manage to be terribly funny and very sweet at the same time. You can listen to all of his songs in their entirety on the website, where you can also buy them for a dollar each. Some of them you can download for free, like this terrific cover, which is far superior to the original (probably due to the liberal use of the banjo): [...]

[...] OK, I have this awesome song I want to share with you! (Even though we don’t usually agree on music, I think you may like it too, Agent Crops a Lot!) I was listening to Cast On With Brenda Dayne while I was spinning and she always finds the best podsafe music. I don’t know how she has time to listen to so much music to always have such great songs ready for her podcasts. Anyway — the song that she played is called Skullcrusher Mountain by Jonathan Coulton. You can either listen to the latest Cast On Episode (#44) to hear it or you can go right to his website. The song is located about 1/2 way down the page in the section called Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow. Just click and listen! I’m cruising through some of the other songs now like That Spells DNA. Really catchy! [...]

[...] The important thing was that I got to run two Ninja! games and a Dread game (based off of the truly wonderful Jonathan Coulton song “Skullcrusher Mountain”), and played in a number of great games which involved everything from tornadoes of death-fairies to being a crazy person who traveled through time. Boy, I needed that. On the evening of New Years Day, as Reid and I are driving back to Chicago, we had our first real, animated, discussion of our game in months. Then, we didn’t stop. Talking about Dream of Nature had to be cut off a few times while in the car this week because it distracted the driver to much and caused us to drive in a terrifying manner. Once, Reid failed to navigate a PetSmart because he was too busy telling me about his latest great idea, and I had to steer him so he didn’t crash into displays of pet toys and then walk right by the cat supplies we’d come to pick up. He finally stopped talking when he realized that while carrying 40lbs of cat litter, I really wasn’t listening. We’ve both been paying less attention then we probably should be at work, and it’s all paying of. [...]

[...] For now, click on over to Coulton’s music store and give a listen; I highly recommend Re your brains on the Thing a Week II album, and of course, the geek ballad of the everyman, Code Monkey on Thing a Week III. He seems to rotate which handful of tracks are available for free; in today’s selection, Shop Vac is pretty campy but still fun, and who can resist George W. Bush talking about his Duty?
[...] I don’t know how I missed Jonathan Coulton’s music for so long. I’ve listened to two of his songs before when I found links to them, and now regret not delving more deeply then. I’ve been jumping through his list of songs and haven’t found any I haven’t liked yet. [...]

[...] Coulton seems committed to working successfully as a musician without a restrictive contract, and he makes use of some geeky tools. When I tried to stream “Code Monkey,” I noticed that my browser was connecting to a nyud.net address. Coral uses those addresses to cache material under high demand to protect the hosting servers from overload. He uses Creative Commons to license his music. The information pages for his songs have lyrics. In contrast to recently blogged happenings, the one “Code Monkey” even has chords. His MySpace page allows downloads. [...]
