This is the New Server

By JoCo May 29, 2007

I moved this site to a different host, so if you’re seeing this post it means you’re looking at the new version (the old one was still up for a while as the new DNS information propagated around the NetterWebs). I expect there will be lots of problems, because I am lazy and sloppy – if you notice something not working right, you can let me know in the comments to this post and I’ll get it fixed.

I should say this is nothing against my old host, which was the web hosting arm of CDBaby: HostBaby. In fact I’m very sad to leave them – cheap unlimited bandwidth, excellent technical support – but there’s no shared hosting solution that I can realistically expect to stay up during those really big traffic spikes. I’ve switched to a dedicated server.

For a long time, I have went onto Downloads to listen to songs whenever I am on the computer.

However, I am unable to reach the songs, and thus, I cannot purchase them.

Thanks.

Jonathan,

Love the website and your music - tried to show it to a friend today, but I can't get the music to open; in fact, all the links just take me to the home page... possibly a result of the new server...?

Wondering why the switch? Why IT guy no like old host?

JY says

Cool...thanks for adding explanation.

"You" is broken. :-(
I'm getting:
Warning: chdir() [function.chdir]: No such file or directory (errno 2) in /home/admin/domains/jonathancoulton.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/JSee/contentsearch.php on line 2

Thank you for all your great music.

OK, problems:
I can get to the Music page, but clicking any of the song info page links don't work.
Here's the info page link I go to for Creepy Doll, http://208.70.78.143/songdetails/Creepy%20Doll
and here's the 404 error message on that page,

Not Found

The requested URL was not found on this server.
Apache Server at Port

However, Payloadz links do appear to be working. I can put stuff in a cart. I don't know if I'd be able to download if I actually checked out.

I just tried subscribing to the RSS 2.0 feed to see if it would work, and it seems to be pointing to the old server or something because the first post title is "This server will have trouble" and when I click on a post it doesn't come up. Here's the error message:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@jonathancoulton.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.jonathancoulton.com Port 80

Andrea says

Oh, also, while you can get to the Info page, each of the links on said page yeild a 404 error, but one that appears on a regular one of your pages, rather than an unfriendly unbranded white screen.

Forums seem to work.

Something's screwy with the headers. From some pages "Contact" brings you to a page with several addresses, but from the shows page "contact" is just a mailto link for you. Also "press" seems to show up in the header on the shows page but nowhere else. Also, from the "shows" page you can't get into the music page, which btw is labeled "songs" instead. So it seems like the header on that page is just generally all kinds of wrong.

Zac says

I'll pile on. The Feedburner RSS Feeds work, but the one hosted on your site ( http://www.jonathancoulton.com/feed ) doesn't. Ditto what Andrea said about the post from the old servers.

janet says

Something's also wrong with the way the forums work. You can view them the normal way when you're not signed on, but when you are, what you see is an unformatted list.

Kerrin says

Oh dear, it looks like all the pages I wrote got hosed in the move, in fact that appears to be most of the issues. I can fix them....once JC gives me access again.

Moving servers is always such a pain. But it will be worth it next time JC gets dugg, mentioned on CNN, or something like that.

Kerrin says

Guess what.....You Tube just featured a Jonathan Coulton song! Great timing!

I have found a way around *some* of the issues until the site is corrected.

If you get an error page, try replacing

http://www.jonathancoulton.com/
with
http://208.70.78.143/~admin/

so for example:

http://www.jonathancoulton.com/store/merchandise
becomes
http://208.70.78.143/~admin/store/merchandise

This doesn't work for everything though.

And now I have the theme to "The Garry Shandling Show" going through my head based on the title of this post.

JoCo says

Woof, I stink. Some rookie mistakes have been corrected, so I think we're getting there. Thanks everyone for the free QA.

Andrea says

OK, everybody go log into your YouTube accounts and mark as spam all the spammy comments to his featured video!

And let's all thank RevBigHead again for the fabulous production values on the JoCo videos he took! I'm sure that helped get this song featured.

Colleenky says

Didn't the Forum page used to have a tab to go back to the JoCo home page? Cause that's gone now.

Hey, This site runs Apache with a funny cert!
